2009 WEST END POETS FESTIVAL
Dear Friends: The West End Poetry Festival is in its third year and I am very pleased to extend an invitation to everyone. We have worked very hard to provide the community of NC with a wide range of poetic styles and talents. It is our mission to offer quality programming at minimal or no cost to the participant, while providing an opportunity for poets to express themselves. As a result of the Town of Carrboro's commitment to the arts, the generosity of grants received from the NC Arts Council, Strowd Roses, individual sponsors, and participating writer's passion for their work, this year's event is able to continue even in the most difficult of times. It is during the challenges of life that many inspirations are realized and new works of art are brought to fruition. This event is a great experience for someone new to poetry or to the well-seasoned expert. You will see that there are positive experiences for all ages to encounter! Come be a part of this annual event and support the talents of North Carolinians. 2008 WEST END POETS FESTIVAL ~ in review
With over thirty-five participating poets and a combined attendance for the day of 328 (topping in one day our previous two day event counts over the first two years of this event), the West End Poets Festival of 2008 can be considered a great success. The morning and afternoon sessions were held at the Carrboro Century Center. These sessions offered poetry events and readings for grades K-5, Middle and High Schoolers and UNC Professors and students. Eight very talented award winning North Carolina Poets closed out the afternoon session. The evening session was hosted at DSI Comedy Theater where our Carrboro and Hillsborough Poet Laureates got the evening started. The night blocks featured published poets, musical performances, spoken word artist Church da Poet and award winning poetry slam team, SlamCharlotte. At this time we would once again like to thank all of our poet participants who helped us represent our theme "Diversity in Poetry" through theatrical performances, readings, music, spoken word, and slam. They keenly demonstrated with wonderful talent poetry's ability to make us laugh, cry, and be united and exalted through the gift of words.
