STOP LOOK
LISTEN
as gate stripes swing down
count the cars hauling distance
upgrade through town:
warning whistle, bellclang,
engine eating steam,
engineer waving.....

| These
words are the beginning of the poem "Crossing"[
by Phillip Booth (1958) ], and one
can easily reflect back to when the Durham-Greensboro
Southern Railway line began servicing the area to the
west of Chapel Hill. The town was known as West
End and the train station went simply by 'The
Depot'. |

Why WEST END ?
 Carrboro
was known at one time in its history as WEST END. This
name derived from being located 'west of Chapel Hill".
The Carrboro community is proud
of the artistic talents that exist among its citizens.
To recognize the history of Carrboro and to showcase
the poets that live or visit the area, the name WEST
END POETS was selected for this poetry festival.
